Lucy reached back, then pulled her arm forward with a jerk, sending the hook flying across the water in a perfect arc, a smile spreading across her face, Charlotte momentarily forgotten. She let it sink slowly, then tightened her line, feeling like if she closed her eyes, the years would melt away. It had been a long time since she’s stood at the edge of the water, a fishing pole in her hand, her body tensed for the tug that would signal a fish was on the line.

Looking up at the clear blue sky, then across the lake at the trees reflected in its shimmering blue surface, she took a deep breath of the fresh air, feeling all the tension draining away. She was aware of Roger standing on the bank next to her, could smell just the slight hint of his cologne in the breeze, but ignored the tingle deep inside her. For just a few minutes, she was going to let go and just live in the moment. She so seldom had that ability, it felt almost foreign to her.

Backing away from the water, scanning the shore for a place to prop up her pole, she almost missed the first tug on her line. Spinning back to face the water, she held the pole still until she felt a stronger tug, then pulled back and set the hook, feeling the fish already fighting.

“I’ve got a bite,” she said, reeling the line in, surprised by how much the fish was fighting. “I must be out of shape. This is harder than I remember it being.”

Roger set down his pole, grabbed the net, and stood next to her. “You’re doing great; keep the tip of the pole up,” he coached. “There are some big fish in this lake. You may have just snagged one of them.”

It took several heart-pounding moments to pull the fish in, but when Roger scooped it up in the net, thrashing and spraying water everywhere, it was huge, the biggest fish she’d ever caught. “Oh, my God, that thing is huge,” she said, trying to catch her breath. “I’ve never seen one that big. Are we going to keep it?”

Roger brought the fish over to her. “That all depends; are you going to eat it?” he asked, holding the fish up. “It’s big enough to fillet and fry. I’m sure the boys will be more than happy to help.”

She studied the fish for a second, her mouth watering at the thought of fresh fish. “It seems wrong to keep it, but I’d love some fresh fish. It’s been a long time since I’ve had any.”

Just as the words came out of her mouth, the fish began to flounder, slipped out of Roger’s hands, and began to jump and thrash its way back toward the water. She screamed, threw down her pole, and dove for the fish, came up empty-handed, but managed to splash them both with ice-cold water. Roger tried to throw the net over the fish but missed, spraying them with water.
